Spoon, Knife and Fork across Slovenian Dialects

The article presents Slovenian dialect names for cutlery used in eating or preparing food – spoon, knife and fork, from a geolinguistic, word-formational as well etymological semantic-motivational perspective. ethnological framework serves particular to present the reasons (non-)borrowing of lexemes. It turns out that terms spoon are not diverse point view borrowing, since denotata have been use language area relatively long time. fork was introduced late part cutlery, so most common name it is diminutive, high level lexeme borrowing observed contact with non-Slavic area. demonstrates diversity due different uses past. lexemes nožič, vilice razsoška plural razsoške undergone change, they kept their structural suffixes, but these do (or rather, no longer) carry meaning; thus tautological derivations. nož pošada display semantic meaning both has narrowed hypernym → hyponym direction.
